I've always been quite partial to Belle (being the bookworm she is), Mulan (because she's a fighter and super awesome in general), and Ariel (simply because she's a mermaid and I think mermaids are cool). Oh, and I like Rapunzel. Her chameleon's pretty sweet. (:
I like Belle. I've recently gained a new appreciation for her because of how alike we are. I like Rapunzel. The story of Rapunzel is my favorite fairytale. So, those are my two favorites, but I like Mulan and Tiana, too. I like Meg's song (I Won't Say 'I'm In Love'), but the music of Hercules is really it's only redeeming quality for me (They got almost all the mythology wrong!) By the way, did you ever notice that Mulan is not actually a princess? :)
I completely agree about the Hercules mythology. I was outraged, really. It was so far from the original Greek myth that I could hardly recognize the story!
As for Belle from Beauty and the Beast, I don't recall there being any talking dishware or candelabras in the original tale, and Gaston was a completely new (and frankly awfully imagined) character. There was no mention of Belle's dreams, or of Belle's family.
Mulan is not a princess, that is true. There are some Disney princesses who married their way into nobility, like Cinderella and Belle, but Mulan never did. Another story that Disney completely ruined...Mulan. The original hero, Hua Mulan, was an idol, a heroic figure of courage, strength, and wit. Fa Mulan from the Disney movies is a pitiful attempt to adapt the Chinese ballad.
Okay, again, sorry for the ranting. I really cannot help myself.
@Robyn Ooh, Meg's song is one of my favorites. I also like the one where Hercules sings, "I will find my way, I can go the distance..." That's one of my favorites. However, I can't really have a say on the accuracy of the mythology, since Hercules is one of the myths I never got around to reading. (:
I did notice that! That doesn't make her any less awesome. Pocahontas isn't a princess either, did you notice?
@Makayla Haha, that's perfectly alright, Makayla. I'm sure if I knew more about the original stories I'd be ranting too. But you have to take into consideration that this is Disney we're talking about. They had to kid-friendly-ify it and add some songs. (:
@Seana: Yes, I do realize they don't want to have younger children knowing that The Little Mermaid's tongue was cut off or that she died (well, turned into sea foam, anyway). The singing is good--I'm really not much of a singer myself--but some musicals are just silly. When is the entire kitchen staff going to burst out into song when preparing a feast, or when will ballplayers start dancing and singing instead of actually playing? Haha, yup, I think I'm partial to the original versions. :)
These are very well-drawn. (or photographed? are these real people?) Well, Mulan still looks like a cartoon. And Cinderella looks almost exactly like Taylor Swift to me. But otherwise, these are amazing.
In my personal opinion, the Disney adaptations of the fairy-tale princesses have ruined the original tales. The Disney Cinderella had so little do with the original story! Really...talking rats that sewed dresses? That was highly unnecessary. And The Little Mermaid, "Ariel," had so little emotion in it compared to the Andersen version. Not to mention anything of how Disney turned Mulan from a truly skilled and brave warrior to some bumbling girl cross-dressing her way into a war. Honestly!
Sorry about that rant, but I can't help bringing the topic up anytime Disney princesses are mentioned. Without any bias, these pictures are beautifully crafted.
I don't know if they're photographed or drawn, but I agree, they're fantastic!
They did have to make the story appealing to a younger audience. (: Talking mice might've been the best option. Although, Mulan does become a skilled warrior by the end. I can see what you mean, though. Sometimes we like our heroes to be exactly like the books.
Just a little fun fact... On July 2, 2014, the movie "Maleficent" is coming out! A movie told from the point of view of the evil fairy from Sleeping Beauty.
And, I'm curious Seana, are there any actresses who you think could portray Disney princesses?
I'm always interested in antagonist's-point-of-view stories...like Wicked, adapted from The Wizard of Oz! Maleficent is actually one character that Disney did not change too much.
I am not entirely sure why, but Amanda Seyfried has always looked like a Rapunzel to me. Maybe it's the long blonde hair... Emma Watson is definitely one of my favorite actresses...can you argue with Hermione? For The Little Mermaid/Ariel, I just see Bella Thorne. Maybe it's the hair again, haha.

Cinderella looks so much better in this picture than in the movie. (in my opinion :)
