Character Development

This post is about character development  and is, I believe, my final post on what I learned while at the college writing thing.

When we think of characters we love, what sticks out? Do you remember their hair color? Do you remember their courage? More often than not, it's the personalities of the characters that make them memorable, versus their appearance. Some are brave, others relatable. Some are timid, others inquisitive.

When thinking of characters, think also about their backstory. Where did they come from? What did they endure? etc. Think of change that happened. How does that change affect him/her/the people around them?

Be specific! Know what makes a character distinctive, unlike anyone else.

Remember that in a story, a character changes and grows. Put that potentiality into play through your description. When you think of a character, think not of a static being, but of a person moving across space and time.

Get to know your character well before you begin writing about him or her.

Are you struggling to think of how to get to know your character? Here are some questions that will help you out.

First, think about the appearance and background of this character.

What is this character's name?

What is this character's age?

Where does the character live?

Who are the character's family members (briefly describe)?

What is one notable aspect of the character's appearance (bitten nails, frizzy hair, a scar, etc.)?

Next, consider what motivates this character. What goals does this character have?

What motivates your character? Money? Love? Truth? Power? Justice? Success?

What does your character want more than anything else? What is he or she searching for?

What other characters or events are interfering with your character's goals? What obstacles are in the way?

Now, think about what this character struggles with.

What is your character's single greatest fear? how did your character acquire his or her fear?

What are your character's flaws and weaknesses?

How does the character's fears and flaws prevent them from reaching their goals?

What is your character's deepest regret?

Finally, consider what kind of personality this character has.

How does your character feel on the inside?

What kind of person is your character? (i.e. caring, arrogant, angry, gentle, compassionate, frustrated, etc.)

We don't always present ourselves to others in a way that accurately reflects how we feel inside. For example, we might be shy or insecure but come across as stuck-up or aloof. How do others perceive your character?

  3. Hi, Seana.
I wanted to make sure you didn't misunderstand me yesterday. I want to write the ending for the "story". I will try to get it written and sent to you by tomorrow night, but I need Lily's bit first. :)

    1. Fabulous! Sadly, Lily has not gotten back to me. I'm not sure if it's a glitch of emails (our emails were being a bit of a nuisance), or if she's working on it. I'll see if I can contact her. (:
