Hunger Games Spotlight: Rue

And now, after a few of the main characters have been spotlighted on, I'm taking a break from that stuff and doing one on Rue.

"I'm very hard to catch. And if they can't catch me, they can't kill me. So don't count me out."

Rue is the smallest and youngest tribute in the games, and her home is in District 11.  Rue is often described as being small and underestimated by her fellow competitors. Along with Rue, Thresh was sent from District 11 to fight. Rue manages to stay alive for a while by staying off the ground and living in a tree for most of the time. She and Katniss make an alliance after a Tracker Jacker incident and they need each other's help to survive.

Rue dies at the age of 12 when a tribute shoves a spear into her stomach. Katniss covers her with flowers and sings to her, which tells the Capitol that Rue was more than just a piece in their games. 

***SPOILER ENDED ALERT*** (at least I think so...)

And now a quick note from another online resource that says more about Rue than I could have remembered on my own.

Rue and Thresh are described in the book as having dark skin and brown hair. Rue worked with great effort in the orchards in District 11. She would always work from sunrise to sunset, alongside the other citizens of her district. Rue was the oldest child in her family. She has 5 younger siblings. Despite her size, she was able to jump from tree to tree in the orchards. Her considerable agility and skill at traveling through the tree tops are probably the reason she earned a good score after the private training sessions preceding the 74th Hunger Games (later, Katniss thinks her score was much too low). This ability, and her small stature, made her able to climb the tallest trees in District 11, allowing her to see the flag signaling quitting time first and sing her four note song when work was over. This tune was picked up by the mockingjays in the area, which spread the message through the orchards, letting the others know that the working day was over. Rue claimed that these mockingjays were her special friends.
