Tips for the aspiring author

Since I'm an aspiring author, these tips are from a personal standpoint. Feel free to leave a comment with some other tips.

1. When writing about a character, put yourself in their shoes. So, if your character is shrugging their shoulders while walking with a limp, practice this. Shrug and walk with a limp for a while to really understand their feelings. Talk like the character (accents, lisps, trademark words) and maybe even make yourself look like the character. Although, if they tend to die their hair neon yellow and wear blue plaid bow ties, this might be a bit embarrassing.

2. Make sure to keep your plot twists surprising and hidden. Don't make the twist so obvious your readers are left saying, "I already knew that elephant in the chicken suit was going to run around yelling, 'Don't hate me 'cuz I'm beautiful!" That would just be rather boring. Keep your readers on their toes, not sure who's good, who's bad, and who's just plain odd.

3. The characters should have their personalities very well stated, or else they'll just kind of blend into one mush of people/animals/objects. If your mermaid character is bubbly and absent-minded at times, be sure to make her demonstrate that in the things she does. Or if your character is a friend who's cocky and thinks he's "all that" be sure to bring in some snarky comments for him to speak. "You really thought that wearing a fluffy tutu was the best idea for our football game? You'll make us look like chumps!"

4. Endings off books can either make your novel a star or a stinker. Some authors can pull off a very suspenseful ending that leaves you wanting more of the books, but with others it just doesn't quite flow as nicely. Others choose the "Happily Ever After" ending, but sometimes this can be a bit cliche. Keep your ending fitting with the rest of the story and don't make me want to burn the book in a boiling vat of Jell-O.

And now I'm brain-dead so I'm going to finish up some other random things that I enjoy doing in the evening.
